The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has extensive collections of Archaeology, Natural History, Social and Industrial History and Visual Arts. In addition the History Centre holds collections of published and original documents.

The Herbert also holds a significant Asian Life in Britain archive. It includes photographs, recordings, printed material, books, magazines and documents relating to various organisations including the Indian Workers' Association, the Communist Party of Great Britain, Indian Youth Association, the Progressive Writers Association and many others.
