The Walker

The Walker Art Gallery houses an internationally important collection of Art from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. It is especially rich in European Old Masters, Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite pictures as well as modern British works. Outstanding works include masterpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Poussin, Gainsborough and Hogarth. Alongside these major arties though, is a canon of work by the internationally acclaimed Sikh artists, Amrit and Rabindra Singh, which were shown at the Walker Art Gallery between 22 January and 17 April 2005. Described as ‘Past Modern' the work of these Singh twins explores important areas of critical debate, challenge existing stereotypes and attempts to redefine generally accepted, narrow perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society.
