Painting of Maharajah Ranjit Singh
This miniature painted in Lahore around 1835-40 depicts Ranjit Singh mounted on a horse accompanied by armed men. This horse may be his favourite horse, Leili. His love for horses exceeded his love for jewels and luxuries. If he heard of an outstanding horse of rare quality, he went out of his way to possess it. Leila belonged to an Afghan Tribal Chieftain, but the Chieftain would not part with it. So the Maharajah went to war to get it. Such was his fascination with a well bred horse.
