Signing of the Treaty of Bhairowal

Under the Treaty of Bhairowal, signed on 26th December 1846, the British annexed the eastern half of the Sikh Kingdom and became custodians of the other half. They recognised the 11 year old Duleep Singh as the heir apparent, with his mother, Rani Jindan becoming Queen Regent.

The picture commemorates the signing of the Treaty. Those present include Maharajah Duleep Singh, Sheik Imam, ud-Din, Ranbir Singh and representatives of the British Government, Henry Lawrence, Lord Gough, Lord Hardinge and Frederick Currie.
