Guru Nanak with a Kneeling Hindu Raja

This miniature is from the Janam-sakhi in Panjabi, an account of the life of Guru Nanak compiled and copied by Daya Ram Abhrol in 1733.  The 57 miniatures are by Alam Chand Raj.  The work consists of a series of 58 anecdotes (sakhis) exemplifying the subjects of the compositions of Guru Nanak, often in the form of dialogues with other mystics, in which they acknowledge the superiority of his teaching.

In the painting the Raja sits before Guru Nanak with folded hands while Mardana watches from the right and the Raja‘s servant waves a chauri over his head.
